From Ériu to Erin
The story of Erin
Éire is the Irish word for Ireland, and Éirinn is the form it takes after certain prepositions — as in "in Ireland." English speakers heard that form, wrote it Erin, and treated it as a name in its own right, helped along by centuries of poetry and song that used Erin where prose would say Ireland. The slogan "Erin go bragh" carried it further, out of literature and onto banners and emigrant ships. From there it became a given name in the English-speaking world rather than in Ireland itself, taken up in America, Britain, Canada and Australia — a name for the country, given by people who had left it or descended from those who had.
