Where it comes from

The story of Erynn

Eriu was one of three goddesses in the Irish mythological tradition who each asked the incoming Milesians to name the island for her; Eriu's name is the one that stuck. Erin became an English-language poetic name for Ireland in the eighteenth century and a girls' name in the twentieth, rising sharply in America from the 1960s and reaching the top twenty by 1983. The respellings followed: Erin, Eryn, Erinn, Erynn, Eiren. Erynn uses both available substitutions — y for i and a doubled n — and is the most thoroughly respelled of them.

Meaning

Ireland

Irish Eire is the name of the country, from Old Irish Eriu, which was also the name of a goddess said to personify the land. Erin comes from the dative and prepositional form Eirinn, and it entered English through poetry — Erin go bragh, 'Ireland forever'. So the English name preserves an Irish case ending that the nominative does not have. The derivation is settled and the grammar is genuinely part of it.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Erynn went to 19 girls in 2025, but Erin and Eryn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 390, which makes it the 599th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,517 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,121 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Erynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
