The story of Ethelyn
Ethel was not a name in its own right in Anglo-Saxon England — it was the first half of longer ones — and it became independent only in the nineteenth century, when novelists and the medieval revival brought Anglo-Saxon names back into use. Once Ethel existed, the endings attached: Ethelyn, Ethelene, Ethelinda. So this name is a Victorian revival of a fragment of an Old English compound, extended by a twentieth-century American suffix — three periods of English in six letters.
Meaning
noble
Old English aethel means noble or of good family, and it was the most prestigious first element available to Anglo-Saxon naming — royal families used it almost exclusively. It survives in Ethel, in the German adel behind Adelaide and Adolf, and in the English word atheling, a prince of the royal house. The derivation is not disputed. The -lyn ending is a much later American addition and carries nothing.

Fashion outlook
Ethelyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The Old English element behind it is documented and genuinely royal.
- Ethel and Lyn are both complete names available inside it.
- Three syllables with a firm front stress, which carries a short surname well.
- Ethel is very strongly associated with the oldest generations, and this name inherits that.
- The -lyn ending belongs to a different period from the front, so the name reads as of two eras at once.
- Ethelyn, Ethelene and Ethelinda are all in the record and close in sound.
