Ethelene
Feminine · “noble”
Ethel was never a name until somebody cut it off the front of a dozen longer ones. Ethelred, Ethelbert, Etheldreda and Ethelinda all carry it as their first element, and the nineteenth century detached it, used it alone, and produced a name that looks Anglo-Saxon and is in fact Victorian.

The story of Ethelene
Two novelists put it into general use inside about a year of each other. One gave the name to a young woman in a long novel about a merchant family; the other to the heroine of an enormously popular family story that stayed in print for decades and was read aloud in a great many households. Both appeared in the mid-eighteen-fifties, both were widely read, and the name goes from essentially nothing to a staple within a generation. Names revived by fiction usually have one book behind them. This one had two at once, which is probably why it took so completely.

Fashion outlook
Ethelene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

- The rhythm is even and the name carries well at length.
- The base name is strongly associated with one generation and reads that way.
- Etheline and Ethelyn both appear and the spelling gets queried.
- The stress placement is unsettled between the front and the back.
