Estuardo
Masculine · “steward”
The royal house of Stuart is named after a job, and the job is looking after the pigs. Old English stigweard is the sty-warden, the officer responsible for the household's livestock and then for the household itself, and Estuardo is that word after nine hundred years and a trip through Spanish.

The story of Estuardo
Walter FitzAlan was made High Steward of Scotland in the twelfth century, his descendants took the office as their surname, and one of them married Robert the Bruce's daughter, which is how a household officer's title became the name of a royal dynasty and eventually of a united British crown. Mary, Queen of Scots, raised in France, adopted the French spelling Stuart because French has no w. Spanish then took the name and did what Spanish does to any word beginning with s plus a consonant: it added an e in front, exactly as it does in escuela, Espana and estudio. Estuardo's best year in United States records is 1990, and it is strongest among Guatemalan families.
Meaning
steward, keeper of the household
From Old English stigweard, combining stig, a hall or a sty, with weard, a guardian or keeper. The office rose from managing livestock to managing an entire royal household, and the High Steward of Scotland gave his title to the family that became the Stewarts and then the Stuarts. The initial E of the Spanish form is a prosthetic vowel, added because Spanish does not begin words with s plus a consonant.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The ua is a single glide rather than two vowels, and the initial e is fully pronounced; it is a real syllable, not a spelling artifact.

The Eliu test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Estuardo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eliu climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eliu's path sketches the road Estuardo is walking now.
Estuardo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Old English meaning and a royal dynasty behind it.
- Recognizable to English speakers as Stuart while being distinctly Spanish on the page.
- Stu is available as a ready English-language everyday form.
- English speakers will hear Stuart and drop the initial e.
- It is strongly associated with Guatemala and Central America rather than with Spain.
- The original meaning is a keeper of the sty, which is not what most families expect.
