Hindu cosmology assigns a guardian to each of the eight directions — the Dikpalas — and Ishana holds the northeast, which is why temple plans and traditional house design treat that corner as the most auspicious. Vastu practice still places the prayer room there. A name that is also a compass direction and a form of a god is doing three jobs at once, and Sanskrit does that often.
