Esha is Sanskrit for desire, and in devotional writing it is also a name of the goddess. It is short, open and easy in any language, which is part of why it traveled: it is given across India and among Indian families abroad, and it also happens to be a plausible spelling for several unrelated names.

Where it comes from

The story of Esha

Sanskrit supplies Indian naming with a vast stock of words that can be given directly, and short ones travel best: Esha, Isha, Asha, Uma and Maya are all ordinary words as well as names. Esha has been given across Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and Bengali-speaking families and became widely used in the later twentieth century. It came to American and British records with South Asian migration, and its short, open shape has kept it intact in English, which mangles longer Sanskrit names badly.

Meaningscholars disagree

desire; wish

Sanskrit isha and esha carry desire or wish, and the name is also used as an epithet of the goddess in devotional texts. A second reading takes it from isha, a lord or master, which is a different word with the same transliteration. Both are genuine Sanskrit and the English spelling does not tell them apart.

Esha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 184 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Esha went to 27 girls in 2025, but Eesha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 61, which makes it the 899th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,979 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 26,349 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 59,528 for Esha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two open syllables: as easy as a name can be in any language.
  • The meaning is a single word and a warm one.
  • It is instantly recognized across India and the South Asian diaspora.
What to consider
  • Esha, Isha and Eesha are all in use and near-identical in speech.
  • The first vowel is read two ways in English, and the spelling does not settle it.
  • It is short enough to offer nothing to shorten and no formal register.
