Where it comes from

The story of Erva

Arwa al-Sulayhi ruled Yemen from the late eleventh century into the twelfth, first alongside her husband and then alone, for about half a century; she moved the capital to Jibla, built roads and mosques, and is still remembered in Yemen as the little Queen of Sheba. Turkish writes the name Erva, and in recent decades it has become one of the popular girls' names in Turkey. The American Erva is older and separate: it appears at the end of the nineteenth century, when Ervin, Erma and Verna were in the air, and nothing connects it to the Turkish name.

Arwa is usually glossed as a female mountain goat, an image of grace in Arabic poetry. The American Erva of the late nineteenth century has no recorded source and is not documented as related.

Erva sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Erva sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short and easy to say.
  • A living name in Turkey with a documented Arabic root.
  • Very rare in America, so an Erva is unlikely to share it.
What to consider
  • People will hear Irma or Erma and may write it that way.
  • The Turkish and American pronunciations differ; decide which one the family uses.
  • An American Erva from the old records and a Turkish Erva share letters, not history.
