Where it comes from

The story of Erron

The vowel before r has been unstable in English for centuries, and American and British speech settled it differently. In most American accents the vowels of marry, merry and Mary have merged, so Aaron, Erin and Aron all come out with the same opening, close to the word air. In British English they stay distinct and Aaron begins with the vowel of car. A respelling is therefore not a change to the name but a record of which side of that split the speller was on, which is why Erron, Aron and Airon all appear in American data and none of them appears in British registers. The name itself is one of the oldest in the book and one of the least explained: no convincing Hebrew derivation exists, and an Egyptian origin has been proposed for it as for Moses.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Erron went to 6 boys in 2025, but Eron is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 908th most-given boys’ name of the year — 9,787 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 85,404 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Erron itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

What to consider
  • Aaron is the standard spelling by an enormous margin.
