The story of Erminia
Tasso finished his crusader epic at the end of the sixteenth century and it became one of the most set, painted and quoted poems in Europe for two hundred years. Erminia is not the heroine and is the character everybody remembers: she puts on borrowed armor, rides out at night, is chased, ends up living with shepherds, and eventually finds the man she is looking for badly wounded and cuts off her own hair to bind his wounds. Painters loved the scene among the shepherds and composers loved the disguise. Italian naming took the character's name up in the ordinary way that literature feeds a name stock, and it has been in steady use ever since among families who have never read a line of the poem.
Meaning
army man, in the feminine
The base is a Germanic compound joining the words for an army and a man, and the reading is settled. Italian built the feminine with its usual final vowel, which is a productive and completely regular operation in that language. The dropped h at the front follows Italian spelling, which has no use for the letter except as a hardness marker.
