The story of Epifanio
The word means an appearing, and it was used in the Greek world for the manifestation of a god or the arrival of a ruler before Christians took it for the showing of Christ to the world. The feast on 6 January is attested in the east in the third century, marking the nativity and the baptism together, and 25 December appears in the west only in the fourth. Once both existed the churches divided the material: the west kept Christmas for the birth and gave Epiphany to the visit of the Magi, while the east gave it to the baptism. In Spain and Latin America the Reyes Magos bring presents on the night of 5 January, which is why Epifanio and Epifania were given to children born in that week and why the name traveled with Mexican families into the American records.
