Voice radio needed a way to say the letters unambiguously, and each alphabet chose its own words. In the American and British services from the 1940s, R was Roger, and because R was the abbreviation for received, the word came to mean message received and understood. When the alphabet was replaced in 1956 the letter became Romeo, but the confirmation stayed Roger, and it is still the standard reply in aviation. The name behind it is Norman, from Germanic elements meaning fame and spear, and it was common enough in medieval England to produce the surnames Rogers, Rodgers and Hodge. Using a surname with its s intact as a given name was a nineteenth-century American habit that also produced Rhodes, Sanders and Rivers.
