Eoin
Masculine · “the Lord is gracious”
Eoin is Irish for John, and so is Seán — which is the interesting part. Irish has two forms of the same name because it received it twice, from two different languages, several centuries apart, and it kept both.

The story of Eoin
Irish took Iohannes from church Latin early, and it became Eoin — the form used for John the Baptist and John the Evangelist in Irish scripture and prayer. Then the Normans arrived with the French Jehan, and Irish took the name a second time, giving Seán. For centuries both have been in use, and neither is a variant of the other. Eoin has stayed the more bookish and more Irish-language form, and its recent revival in Ireland and abroad belongs to the wider return of Irish-language spellings.
Meaning
the Lord is gracious
Through Latin Iohannes from Greek Ioannes, from Hebrew Yochanan — the divine name with chanan, 'to be gracious'. Eoin comes directly from the Latin, which Irish monks knew from the scriptures. Seán is the same name arriving much later through Norman French Jehan. Same meaning, two entirely separate journeys into one language.

Pronouncing Eoin
OH-in
Two syllables, stress on the first, said much as the English Owen — which is a different name. American English will reach for EE-oyn or E-oh-in on first sight, and neither is right. Irish spelling puts the vowels in an order English does not expect.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off
- A genuine Irish-language form with an unbroken record rather than a modern revival spelling.
- The meaning is one of the least disputed in the whole Western stock.
- Short, four letters, and easy to say once someone has said it.
- The spelling is opaque to English readers and will be mispronounced at every first meeting.
- It sounds like Owen, which is a different name and will be substituted constantly.
- Eoin, Eoghan and Owen are three separate names that Americans routinely treat as one.
