Spanish took a German name apart and put it back together. Heinrich begins with an h that Spanish does not sound, so the h went; what was left needed a vowel to start on, so an e was added; and the rest was rebuilt around Spanish habits until Enrique was what remained. Almost nothing survives unchanged.

Where it comes from

The story of Enriqueta

The most famous man with the Spanish and Portuguese form of the name is called the Navigator and barely navigated. A Portuguese prince who sponsored voyages down the African coast, gathered pilots and cartographers, and pushed expeditions past a cape that everyone believed nobody could return from — he made almost no voyages himself, spent most of his life in Portugal on administration and finance, and the epithet was attached to him by a German historian four centuries later. He was an organiser of exploration rather than an explorer, which is arguably the more consequential job and considerably less romantic.

Meaning

Enriqueta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 48 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Enriqueta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has an established short form rather than an improvised one.
  • The rhythm is long and even and carries well.
  • It is instantly placed by any Spanish speaker.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long and most people will shorten it immediately.
  • The qu is read as kw by English speakers who have not met the rule.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
