The story of Eniya
Eithne is everywhere in early Irish literature. A queen of that name appears in the Ulster tales; another is the mother of Lugh, one of the central figures of the mythological cycle; several saints carry it. What it means was already unclear to medieval Irish scribes, who offered guesses. The modern spelling problem is more recent and entirely practical. Irish orthography is regular in its own terms but reads as nonsense to English speakers, so Irish names abroad get rewritten by ear — Sinead for Sinead, Aoife as Eefa, Eithne as Enya. Eniya is one step further out again, an American spelling of an English spelling of an Irish name.
