The story of Emina
Islam came to Bosnia with the Ottomans in the fifteenth century and stayed, and with it came a layer of Arabic and Turkish names that Bosnian adapted to its own sounds: Amina became Emina, Fatima became Fatima and Emina's brothers became Emin and Amir. A poem written in Mostar in the eighteen-nineties about a girl of that name is still recited and sung across the region, which has kept the name warm for over a century. It came to American records with Bosnian families, particularly after the nineteen-nineties.

The Zanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Emina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Zanna climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Zanna's path sketches the road Emina is walking now.
Emina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
