The story of Emani
The root is Arabic īmān, 'faith', which traveled with Arabic traders and Islam down the East African coast and settled into Swahili as Imani. In the United States, Imani gained wide use partly through Kwanzaa, the holiday established in the 1960s, whose seventh principle is Imani — faith. Emani is a recent American respelling of that name, softening the opening vowel in the same way English speakers have long reshaped borrowed names to match how they hear them. Its strongest footholds are in Texas, California and Florida.

'faith' if read as a form of Imani; 'peace' if read as a form of Amani
Emani has no meaning documented in its own right — it is a spelling that sits between two established names. Imani is Swahili for 'faith', from Arabic īmān. Amani is Swahili for 'peace'; the related Arabic amānī means 'wishes, aspirations'. Both readings are honestly available, and families who use Emani draw on one or the other.

The Ciarra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Emani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ciarra climbed just as high around 1997, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ciarra's path sketches the road Emani is walking now.
Emani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads phonetically once heard: three clear syllables, no silent letters, nothing to spell out twice.
- Ready-made short forms already in circulation — Em, Emmy, Mani — none of which need explaining.
- The root is recognizable to Swahili and Arabic speakers, so the name has standing well beyond English.
- Uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom, while the sound stays familiar next to Imani and Amani.
- It will be written Imani by people who know that spelling better, and sometimes Amani. Expect a lifetime of gentle corrections — a small, steady tax rather than a real problem.
- The opening vowel has no single settled pronunciation, so you may hear eh-, ee- and uh- from different people. Deciding early which one your family uses makes introductions easier.
- Em and Emmy are shared with the very large Emma and Emily families, so the short form is much more common than the full name.
- The name is stepping back from its high point rather than climbing, which means fewer age-mates share it — good or less good, depending on what you are hoping for.
