Asha
Feminine · Arabic roots · “Hope”
Asha is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 9,069 girls against 58 boys since 1880.
Asha is a name that arrived in American records by more than one road: it is a Sanskrit word meaning hope, and it is also the Swahili form of Aisha, carried down the East African coast with Arabic. Two syllables, open at both ends, with the soft "sh" in the middle doing all the work. It has held a quiet, unbroken place on the US charts across several decades without ever crowding a classroom.

Where it comes from
From ʿĀʼisha (Arabic) to Asha
The story of Asha
The Sanskrit āśā, hope, is ancient and well attested, and Asha has been a standard girl's name across India for generations. Quite separately, Arabic traders and settlers brought ʿĀʼisha to the Swahili coast, where it wore down to Asha and became one of the most familiar women's names in Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia. English spelling flattened both into the same four letters, so an American Asha may be South Asian, East African, Muslim, Hindu, or none of those. The name's strongest showing in the United States is in states with large immigrant communities — California, New York, Texas — which fits a name that came in through several doors at once.

"Hope, wish" in Sanskrit; "alive, living" through the Arabic name Aisha
Two genuine origins share this spelling. In Sanskrit, āśā means hope or desire, and Asha has long been a given name in India. In Swahili-speaking East Africa, Asha is the everyday form of Arabic ʿĀʼisha, from a root meaning alive or living. Which meaning applies depends entirely on which family the name came through — and either answer is correct.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Merna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Asha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Merna climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Merna's path sketches the road Asha is walking now.
Asha sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, and spelled the way it sounds once the first vowel is set — easy to write early and easy to dictate.
- Works unchanged in English, Hindi, Marathi, Swahili and Somali, which is rare for a name this short.
- Has held a modest, continuous place in US records for decades rather than spiking and vanishing.
- Short enough already that no nickname is required, but has established family diminutives if one is wanted.
- The first vowel gets guessed wrong. Plenty of Americans will read it as ASH-uh, rhyming with the start of Ashley, and a lifetime of small corrections follows.
- Because two unrelated names meet at this spelling, people sometimes assume a specific heritage on hearing it. That can be a pleasure or a small nuisance, depending on the day.
- Nearby names crowd it a little in speech — Aisha, Asia, Asher — so expect the occasional mishearing over the phone.
- Disney gave the name to the lead of an animated feature, so younger children may connect it there first. Associations like that tend to fade with the film.
