The story of Elwanda
The legend is told by a thirteenth-century Polish chronicler and reads like folklore fixed in writing. Wanda is the daughter of the founder of Krakow, rules after him, refuses a German suitor, defeats or repels his army, and then throws herself into the Vistula, in most versions to prevent the war her refusal would cause. There is a mound outside Krakow that has been called her grave since at least the Middle Ages. The name became a national symbol in the nineteenth century, traveled with Polish emigration, and by the time it reached American records it was simply a name. The El- at the front belongs to a different world entirely: a set of decorative openings that American families attached to existing names for a few decades and then stopped using, leaving names like this one behind as markers of the period.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The compound has no meaning. Wanda's own origin is argued over: it may be from the name of a tribe, from a Slavic word, or from nothing recoverable, and the chronicler who first tells her story was writing centuries after the events he describes. The prefix carries nothing at all. What can be said is which half came from where.

Fashion outlook
Elwanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Wanda is waiting inside it as a short, complete name with a real history.
- Every sound is ordinary English and the spelling is unambiguous once seen.
- The rhythm is easy and the name is never misheard once it has been said.
- The prefix dates the name precisely to the early twentieth century in American ears.
- It will be heard as Yolanda and as Wanda, and the second of those is what most people will write.
- There is no meaning for the compound, only for half of it, and that half is itself disputed.
