Ellyn
Feminine
Helen may not be a Greek name at all. It belongs to a set of words the Greeks inherited from whoever was in Greece before them — along with the sea, the hyacinth, the labyrinth and the names of Corinth, Parnassus and Knossos. A lost language left its vocabulary behind and nothing else.

The story of Ellyn
The evidence for the substrate is a set of words with sound patterns Greek does not otherwise produce, clustering around exactly the things a newly arrived people would have to name from the locals: plants, the sea, and places. Thalassa is the sea and is not Indo-European. Hyakinthos, labyrinthos and Korinthos share an ending Greek cannot explain. Helen sits in that company. Whatever her name meant, it meant it in a language that vanished before anyone wrote anything down. English then lost the front of the word as well: medieval borrowings from French routinely dropped the h, which is why hour and honest are still silent and why Helen gave Ellen.

Not established
Helen has no agreed etymology. Torch and a connection with a word for light are the usual proposals, and neither works cleanly. Many linguists place the name in the pre-Greek substrate, meaning it came from a language spoken in Greece before Greek arrived, of which nothing survives but loanwords. Ellyn is the English form with the initial h dropped and a y ending.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ailene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ellyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ailene climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ailene's path sketches the road Ellyn is walking now.
Ellyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
