The story of Elie
Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and departs the world in a whirlwind, and his name traveled through Greek into every European language. French reduced it to Élie. Lebanon's French-educated Christian communities took the French spelling, and it is now among the characteristic men's names of the Maronite and Greek Orthodox families of the Levant. It reaches American records chiefly from there and from France.

About 1 boy in 46,164 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,377 for Elie itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- A settled meaning and one of the longest continuous records any name can show.
- Eli stands beside it as an immediately familiar English form.
- Four letters and two syllables, easy to write early.
- Americans read it as Ellie, which is a women's name, and forms may guess wrong.
- The accent on the É is dropped by American systems, which moves the stress.
- Elie, Eli and Elias are all close and get confused.
