Where it comes from

The story of Eliah

Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal on Carmel and departs in a whirlwind, and his name has been carried through Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike. Greek made Elias of it, and most European languages took the Greek form; English kept a spelling closer to the Hebrew. Eliah, Elia and Elias are all in American records, the last two more common in Italian, German and Spanish-speaking families and this one arriving from several directions at once.

Meaning

Eliah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 56 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Eliah went to 37 boys in 2025, but Elia, Eliyah and Elya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 155, which makes it the 773rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,408 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 11,020 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 46,164 for Eliah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

What to consider
  • Elijah is the standard American spelling and will be written for him constantly.
  • The middle vowel is said two ways depending on the language of the reader.
