Elfrieda
Feminine · “elf strength”
Elfrieda is the German spelling of an Old English name that has become unrecognizable in its own country. The original had an elf in it and a strength element after it, and the woman who carried it most consequentially was accused of arranging her stepson's murder and went on to become the first queen of England to be crowned as such.

The story of Elfrieda
The king died young and his younger half-brother succeeded him, which put the boy's mother in a very good position and made her the obvious suspect. Contemporary sources say only that the king was killed at her household's gate; the accusation that she ordered it appears in accounts written decades later, by writers with reasons of their own, and historians have been arguing about it for a thousand years. What is documented is that she was crowned and anointed as queen, which had not been done in England before, and that she founded monasteries and exercised real authority during her son's minority. The murdered king was made a saint almost immediately, which did not help her reputation, and the story has been told against her ever since.
Meaning
elf strength
Two elements: one naming the elves, who were understood as real and powerful beings rather than as decorations, and one meaning strength or power. The reading is settled. The German spelling with an ie in the middle reflects German orthography rather than the Old English form, which looked nothing like this and would be unreadable to a modern English eye.
How the name formed
- An Old English compound of elf and strength
- Carried by an eleventh-century queen and then dropped
- Kept in German as Elfriede and Elfrieda
- Returning to English in the German spelling
Related forms: Elfriede · Elfreda
Pronouncing Elfrieda
el-FREE-duh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. German says the -ie in the middle as a long e, which is what the spelling is for; English speakers meeting it cold sometimes give it two vowels, which produces a fourth syllable that nobody intends.

Fashion outlook
Elfrieda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine inherited name with a documented meaning and a thousand-year record.
- Freda is available inside it as a short form with a long independent history.
- The elf element is genuinely old and makes for a good story.
- It reads as distinctly German, which is a feature for some families and a complication for others.
- Three syllables and an unusual spelling mean it will be written out often.
- The historical bearer's reputation is contested and the accusation is the famous part.
