The story of Elexis
The Vie de Saint Alexis is where French literature starts, as far as anything surviving is concerned, and the story it tells was one of the most widely copied in Europe for the next four centuries. The name went with it into every western language, always as a man's. What happened in America is separate and can be dated: a prime-time television serial gave the name to a formidable woman at the start of the 1980s, and within a few years it was going to girls in large numbers. The x is worth a note of its own. It is the only common English letter that writes two sounds at once — k and s — which is why it is rare and why a name containing one looks emphatic.

The Lory test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elexis's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lory climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lory's path sketches the road Elexis is walking now.
Elexis sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
