For most of the twentieth century this was the commonest peach in America. The variety was raised in Georgia in the eighteen-seventies, named after the breeder's wife, and became so dominant that for decades a peach in a can, a pie or a crate was very likely this one — a woman's name on an industry.

Where it comes from

The story of Elberta

The man's name arrived in America through New York rather than through England. Elbert is the Dutch form of Albert, brought over by the settlers of New Netherland and used steadily in the Hudson valley long after the colony changed hands — which is why it appears in American records at rates that England never matched. A great many apparently English American names came by that route: the Dutch presence lasted only forty years as a colony and left a naming footprint that outlived it by three centuries.

Meaning

noble and bright

The man's name behind it joins two Germanic elements meaning noble and famous. The feminine ending is a Latin addition and contributes no sense of its own.

Elberta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 58 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Elberta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent once the two elements are pointed out.
  • Berta sits inside it as a short form used across Europe.
  • It has a specific and rather charming American association.
What to consider
  • It shares its name with a fruit variety, which some will know.
  • Alberta is commoner and gets substituted constantly.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
