Elan
Masculine · “tree”
Elan is given to both — 3,533 boys and 798 girls since 1880. See Elan as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Elan meets at a crossroads. In Hebrew, ilan is the word for a tree, and Elan is one of the ways American families write it. In French, elan is the surge a runner makes at the start — and, separately, the word for a moose. The two names look identical on an American birth certificate and have nothing whatever to do with each other.

The story of Elan
The Hebrew road is the shorter and the plainer. Ilan is not a biblical name but a modern one, part of the deliberate return to ordinary Hebrew vocabulary that produced a whole generation of Israeli names taken from nature — trees, dew, light, oak. It is tied to Tu BiShvat, the new year of the trees, which is why the word carries a festival with it as well as a meaning. The French road runs through a verb: elancer, to dart, gives elan, and English took the noun as a loanword for momentum and style, later fixing it in the philosophical phrase elan vital. American use of Elan as a given name draws on both, and often on neither in particular — the spelling is short, clean and open, and it reads as a name in several languages at once without belonging fully to any of them.

tree, in Hebrew; momentum, in French
Two live readings, and which one applies depends entirely on the family. Hebrew ilan is a plain noun for a tree, inherited from Aramaic, and it stands behind the modern Israeli names Ilan and Ilana. French elan is a noun of motion, from a verb meaning to hurl or dart forward, and English borrowed it whole in the nineteenth century to mean dash or verve. The two words are unrelated in root, meaning and sound of origin. They collide only in the American spelling.

Pronouncing Elan
ay-LAHN
Two sayings compete and the choice is really a choice of origin. Hebrew gives ee-LAHN or ay-LAHN with the weight at the back. Read as plain English it comes out EE-lan or AY-lan with the weight at the front. French adds a nasal ending that English speakers rarely attempt. Whichever a family picks will need repeating.

The Merrell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Merrell climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Merrell's path sketches the road Elan is walking now.
Elan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, one obvious spelling, and no silent letters in any of the languages that claim it.
- It works as a name in Hebrew, in French and in English without being translated in any of them.
- Short enough to carry a long surname and distinct enough not to be confused with a neighbor.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled — front or back — and both are defensible, so the name will be said two ways for life.
- In French the same word names an animal as well as a quality, and anyone who knows the language will hear the moose alongside the momentum.
- This spelling is on record for girls too, in numbers small enough that a girl called Elan will be read as a boy on every form. Ilana carries the same Hebrew root without that.
