Where it comes from

Our story of Edris

A mountain in southern Snowdonia is called the chair of Idris, after a figure who is a giant in the folklore and a poet-astronomer in the older Welsh material — the sort of person who could sit on a summit and read the sky. The legend attached to it is one of the best known in Wales: anyone who spends a night alone on the mountain comes down either a poet or a madman. It is repeated in guidebooks, and it is old enough that nineteenth-century travelers were already reporting it as ancient. What makes the mountain worth the climb regardless is the hollow below the summit, a textbook glacial bowl with a black lake in it that looks exactly as though something enormous sat there. The name of the chair may have been describing the hollow rather than the peak all along.

Three separate origins are possible. A Welsh men's name usually read as ardent lord; an Arabic prophet's name of disputed derivation; and an Old English women's name worn down. Each is plausible for different American families, and the spelling alone cannot say which.

Pronouncing Edris

ED-riss

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The Welsh and Arabic originals both put more weight on the second syllable, so the American reading is the odd one out.

Edris sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 24 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Edris sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ed comes off it as a short form that needs no explanation anywhere.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and impossible to mangle.
What to consider
  • Idris is the standard spelling in both Welsh and Arabic and will be written for it.
  • The three possible origins have different pronunciations, so the name is said several ways.
  • The record holds it for daughters as well, so it signals nothing about sex.
