Where it comes from

The story of Edmundo

Edmund was a king of East Anglia killed by Danish invaders in 869 and venerated as a martyr; his shrine at Bury St Edmunds was one of the great English pilgrimage sites, and for centuries he, not George, was the patron saint of England. The Normans carried the name into their own usage and it traveled south with them, giving Spanish and Portuguese Edmundo and Italian Edmondo. Spanish use is steady rather than fashionable, and Edmundo entered United States records with Spanish-speaking families, reaching its best year in 1958. The Old English elements survive unchanged through a thousand years and three languages.

Meaning

protector of prosperity

From Old English ead, wealth, prosperity or fortune, and mund, a hand and thence protection or guardianship. The same ead appears in Edward, Edwin and Edith; the same mund in Raymond, Sigmund and Osmond. Neither element is in dispute, and the compound is a normal Germanic construction meaning something like guardian of riches.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two settled Old English elements and a documented ninth-century saint behind it.
  • Recognized across Spain, Portugal, Latin America and the English-speaking world.
  • Mundo and Ned are two short forms belonging to two different centuries.
What to consider
  • Edmund and Edmond are both standard elsewhere and will be substituted.
  • The Spanish short form Mundo is also a common noun, which draws jokes.
  • It reads as a name of the mid-twentieth century in Latin America.
