Where it comes from

The story of Edmonia

Edmonia Lewis was the daughter of a Haitian father and an Ojibwe mother, orphaned young, put through school by a brother who had made money in the gold fields, and driven out of Oberlin after being accused of poisoning two classmates and beaten by a mob. She went to Boston, learned to carve, and then to Rome, where she worked in marble at a time when sculptors of her sex were expected to hire men to do the cutting — she did it herself, partly so that nobody could say otherwise. Her Death of Cleopatra weighed two tons, was shown at the Philadelphia exposition, then lost for a century, turning up eventually in a suburban shopping mall and later in a salvage yard before it was recognized and restored.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name appears to be a feminine built on Edmond, itself an Old English compound about prosperity and protection. But it is rare enough that no standard account exists, and it may equally have been made up in one household and copied from there.

Edmonia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 29 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Edmonia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is carried by almost nobody, and the one person it is associated with is worth being associated with.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English, so it is never mispronounced.
  • It is long enough to offer several very different short forms.
What to consider
  • It is rare enough that she will spell it out every time.
  • It will be heard as Edmonda, Emonia or Simone by people working from sound.
  • The name is so closely tied to one woman that a child carrying it inherits an expectation.
