Edina
Feminine
Edina is a poetic name for Edinburgh, used by Scottish poets who wanted a grander word than the ordinary one. And Edinburgh itself says fort twice: Din Eidyn was a British hill fort, Eidyn being the district, and English speakers added burh, their own word for a fort, to a name that already had one.

The story of Edina
Edinburgh is one of the clearest cases of a name being explained twice by people who did not understand the first half. Din is the Brittonic word for a fort, Eidyn is the name of the surrounding district, and the whole thing meant the fort of Eidyn. When English speakers took over they heard a single word, dropped the din, and added burh, which means the same thing — so the modern name is Eidyn's-fort with fort attached. Edina is the eighteenth-century poets' version, and it went to America as a place name, which is why there is a Minnesota city called Edina. In Hungary the name arrived by an entirely different road and is much commoner than anywhere else.

Three syllables, stress in the middle. Hungarian stresses the first, E-di-naw, as it does every word. The Minnesota city is said ee-DYE-nuh, with a long i, which is a third reading again.

The Lenae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Edina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lenae climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lenae's path sketches the road Edina is walking now.
Edina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
