Edel
Masculine · “noble”
Edel is given to both — 503 boys and 53 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
German edel means noble, and it is the same element that sits at the front of Adelaide, Adeline, Alice, Ethel and Adolf. Most of those names buried it under a thousand years of change. Edel is the word itself, still spelled as an adjective and still meaning what it says.

The story of Edel
Germanic naming built compounds from a fixed stock of elements, and adal, noble, was one of the most-used, appearing in hundreds of medieval names across the whole Germanic-speaking area. In modern German it survives both as the ordinary adjective edel and as the buried first syllable of a long list of names. American use of the bare adjective as a given name is unusual and comes from more than one direction: German and Austrian families, Irish families for whom Edel is a woman's name, and, most visibly in recent records, Spanish-speaking Caribbean families where it is a man's name. Its best American year is 2005.

noble
German edel, noble, from the Germanic element adal, which gives the first syllable of Adelaide, Adelheid, Adolf and, through French, Alice. That derivation is secure for the German word. Whether every American Edel comes from it is another matter: the name also circulates in Cuban and Caribbean Spanish naming, where its route is less clear, and Irish Edel exists as a form of Edelweiss and of Edeltraud.

The Ephrem test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Edel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ephrem climbed just as high around 1961, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ephrem's path sketches the road Edel is walking now.
Edel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
