Where it comes from
From Aodh to Edan
The story of Edan
Aodh was one of the commonest men's names in early Ireland, and its diminutive Aodhán was carried by a seventh-century monk of Lindisfarne, which is why the Aidan spelling is familiar in England. The Hebrew Idan is modern, part of the twentieth-century Israeli preference for plain vocabulary words as names. Edan appears in American records from both directions and is sometimes simply a variant spelling of Aidan.
Meaningscholars disagree
little fire, or an era
Irish Aodhán is a diminutive of Aodh, the name of a fire god and the ordinary Old Irish word for fire; English wrote it Aidan and, less often, Edan. Hebrew idan is an era or an epoch, a genuine word used as a modern Israeli name. The two are unrelated.

Edan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brenten climbed just as high around 1984, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brenten's path sketches the road Edan is walking now.
