Dotty
Feminine · “gift of God”
The dot on an i has a name, and it turns up in one of the most quoted sentences in English. Not one jot or tittle: a jot is iota, the smallest Greek letter, and a tittle is the little stroke that distinguishes one Hebrew letter from another. Two names for very small marks, both from the same verse.

The story of Dotty
The verse is in Matthew and it says that not the smallest letter or stroke will pass from the law. The Greek says iota and keraia, a little horn; English translated them as jot and tittle, and jot survives as a verb meaning to write something small. Tittle is now almost gone except in that phrase, though the thing it names is on every i and j in this sentence. The name has nothing to do with any of it. Dorothy gave Dot the way English gives short forms — take the first sound and stop — and Dot gave Dotty. What the name does have to reckon with is the adjective, which arrived in English in the nineteenth century and means slightly mad.

gift of God, at two removes
Dotty is a pet form of Dorothy, from Greek doron, a gift, with theos, God — reached by way of Dot, which is Dorothy clipped hard. It is also, in ordinary English, an adjective meaning mildly eccentric or unhinged, and that word is unrelated to the name.

The Luverne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dotty's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Luverne climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Luverne's path sketches the road Dotty is walking now.
Dotty sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
