Dorthea
Feminine · “gift of God”
Theodore and Dorothea are the same two words in opposite order. Theos is God and doron is a gift, so Theodore is God's gift and Dorothea is a gift of God, and Greek could build the compound either way round. Two of the most-used names in Europe are one word-order apart.

The story of Dorthea
Greek compound names could be assembled in either order and the meaning barely shifted, which produced a set of matched pairs: Theodore and Dorothea, Theophilos and Philotheos, Nicodemus and Demonicus. Most of the pairs died and this one did not. Dorothea traveled through Latin into every European language and into English by the sixteenth century, where speech immediately started removing the middle vowel — the second o is unstressed and English throws away unstressed vowels — so that Dorothy, Dorthy and Dorthea are all records of how people actually said it. The novel most associated with the name gave it to a woman who spends the whole book trying to do something useful and is repeatedly told not to.
Meaning
gift of God
Greek doron, a gift, with theos, God. Dorothea reverses the elements of Theodora, and both were in use in the Greek-speaking world at the same time. Dorthea is the American spelling with the unstressed middle vowel dropped, which is how the name is usually said anyway.

The trade-off
- A settled Greek meaning with both elements traceable to ordinary words.
- Three short forms of very different registers, two of which are full names.
- The same spelling is standard in Danish, so it is not only an American simplification.
- Dorothea is the standard spelling in English and this one will be read as a missing letter.
- It is strongly represented among older generations and reads clearly as of their time.
- Dot as a short form is also an ordinary English noun, which children will notice.
