The story of Dorina
French comedy of the seventeenth century used a fixed cast, and the clever servant who understands the plot before the masters do is one of its oldest parts, inherited from Roman comedy and before that from Greek. Dorine is Moliere's version and one of the best written: she has the sharpest lines in the play and is the only character who is never fooled. The name behind her is Greek — doron, a gift, the word inside Dorothea, Theodore, Isidore and Pandora. Dorina is the Italian, Romanian and Hungarian diminutive of the same family, and American entries come from both the theatrical and the central European road.

gift
Usually taken as a diminutive of Dora, itself a short form of Dorothea or Theodora, from Greek doron, a gift. The stage name Dorine belongs to the same family. A separate Romanian and Hungarian Dorina is a diminutive of Dora used in its own right and reached American records independently.

The Lavaun test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dorina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lavaun climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lavaun's path sketches the road Dorina is walking now.
Dorina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
