Donovin
Masculine · “dark brown”
Ireland lost its surname prefixes and then took them back. English administration pushed families to drop the O and the Mac, and by the nineteenth century most had; after independence they were restored in large numbers, and the census shows it happening — the same families, one generation apart, with the prefix back on.

The story of Donovin
A statute of 1465 required Irishmen living in the English-controlled Pale to take an English surname — the name of a town, a color, a trade or an office — and while its reach was limited, the pressure it represented was not. Over four centuries the O and Mac prefixes were dropped almost everywhere, so that a nineteenth-century Irish census shows Donovan, Brien and Carthy where the older records show O Donovan, O Brien and Mac Carthy. After 1922 they came back, deliberately and in numbers, which makes the prefix one of the few pieces of a name that has a political history attached. Donn, the first element, is also the name of the Irish lord of the dead, whose house is a rock off the Kerry coast where the dead were said to gather.
Meaning
dark brown
From Irish O Donndubhain, built on donn, brown, and dubh, black. Donn is also the name of a figure in Irish mythology, the lord of the dead, and whether the color word and the god's name are connected is not settled.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Donovin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brewster climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brewster's path sketches the road Donovin is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled Irish meaning with both elements traceable.
- Three syllables with a clear opening stress that carries well.
- Two short forms, both of which are full names in their own right.
- Donovan is far commoner and at least four spellings compete.
- The prefix that would mark it as Irish is not in the given name at all.
- The i in the last syllable changes nothing you can hear.
