Dino

The story of Dino
Italian makes affectionate forms by trimming the front of a name and keeping the stressed syllable, which is the reverse of what English does — English would give Bernie where Italian gives Dino. The -ino ending is itself a diminutive, so a name like Bernardino is already an affectionate form before anyone shortens it. Italian emigration carried the whole family of them to the United States around the turn of the twentieth century, and in American mouths the long forms were often dropped entirely, leaving Dino on the certificate with nothing written behind it.
Meaningscholars disagree
inherited from whichever long name it came off
Dino has no meaning of its own. It is the tail of a whole family of Italian names ending in -dino and -dinо: Bernardino, from Germanic bern, 'bear', and hard, 'brave'; Aldino and Baldino, from bald, 'bold'; Rodino and Gerardino. Which of them a particular Dino stands on is usually a family fact that stopped being written down a generation or two ago.

The Delmer test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Delmer climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Delmer's path sketches the road Dino is walking now.
Dino sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two clean syllables, and easy in Italian and English mouths alike.
- Long established in Italian-American and Balkan families rather than newly coined.
- Short and warm without being a nickname spelling of something longer in English.
- English speakers reach for DYE-noh on first sight, and the dinosaur association is unavoidable for a small child.
- It is a short form by origin, so it can read as informal on documents.
- Dino, Deno and Dinos all circulate and belong to slightly different traditions.
