Dimitra
Feminine · “mother”
Modern Greek collapsed six different vowel spellings into one sound. Eta, iota, upsilon and three diphthongs all say ee now, which is why Greek children have to learn spelling the hard way and why the same ancient name comes into English as Demetra or Dimitra depending on which century you are transcribing.

The story of Dimitra
The sound change is called iotacism and it happened gradually over about a thousand years, so that by the Byzantine period a Greek speaker pronounced six distinct written vowels identically. Nothing was done about the spelling, which is why modern Greek orthography records a pronunciation nobody has used since antiquity — the same situation English is in with its silent letters. For names this produces a fork at the border: transcribe the letters and you get Demetra, transcribe the sound and you get Dimitra, and both are correct. The masculine, Dimitrios, is one of the most given men's names in Greece, largely because Saint Demetrios is the patron of Thessaloniki and the second city keeps his day seriously.

mother; possibly earth mother
The modern Greek form of Demeter. The second element is mother; the first is disputed between an old word for earth, a word for grain, and a word for barley. Dimitra transcribes the modern pronunciation; Demetra transcribes the ancient spelling. They are the same name.

The Cynitha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dimitra's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cynitha climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cynitha's path sketches the road Dimitra is walking now.
Dimitra sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a completely current Greek name rather than a classical revival.
- Three short forms, all of them used in Greece rather than invented here.
- A documented ancient origin with a modern life attached to it.
- Demetra and Dimitria are both in use, and all three transcribe the same Greek name.
- Outside Greek families it will be read as a variant of Demeter and treated as classical.
- Three syllables with an unfamiliar shape means more repeating than most names need.
