Diem
Feminine · “day”
Diem is given to both — 717 girls and 89 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Carpe diem is a grammatical accident that became a slogan. Diem is not the Latin word for day — that is dies. Diem is what it becomes when something is being done to it, and the phrase is one line of Horace, written in about 23 BC, telling a friend to pick the day the way you pick fruit.

The story of Diem
Horace's line is carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero — pick the day, trusting the next one as little as you can — and the verb is the one used for gathering flowers and fruit. English has always translated it as seize, which is more aggressive than the Latin. It became a motto, a tattoo and a film line, and almost nobody who uses it knows it is half a sentence about not counting on tomorrow. The Vietnamese name arrived in the United States separately, with families after 1975, and has nothing to do with any of it: Vietnamese is a tone language, the name carries a tone that English writing cannot record, and the resemblance is entirely visual.

day — or, in Vietnamese, charming
Two unrelated sources. Latin diem is the accusative of dies, a day, familiar from carpe diem. Vietnamese Diem, written with a tone mark the American record cannot hold, is a separate word meaning charming or beautiful. Which one a family means depends entirely on the family.

The Haneen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Diem's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Haneen climbed just as high around 1997, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Haneen's path sketches the road Diem is walking now.
Diem sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, with nothing hard in either.
- It serves either child, and the records show both.
- Both possible sources are real, documented and pleasant.
- The Vietnamese tone cannot be written on an American form, so half the name does not survive the crossing.
- People who recognize the Latin will quote the phrase, every time, for years.
- The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
