Destiney
Feminine · “Latin destinare”
Destiny is something nailed down. Latin destinare means to make fast, to fix in place, from a root about standing, and a destination is the point you are fixed on. Fate comes from a different idea altogether: fatum is what has been spoken. One word says fixed, the other says said, and English uses them interchangeably.

The story of Destiney
The two English words for the same idea come from opposite metaphors and the difference is worth hearing. Destiny is spatial: something has been fixed, made fast, set in place, and you move toward it. Fate is verbal: something has been said, pronounced, and the saying makes it so. Latin had both, and Greek had a third, moira, meaning a share or portion, as though each life were an allotment cut from a whole. The Norse had a fourth, urdr, related to a verb meaning to become or turn. Four cultures, four pictures of the same thing: a fixed point, a spoken sentence, a portion handed out, and a turning. English inherited two of them and uses them as synonyms, which they are not quite: a destination can be missed, and a pronouncement cannot be unsaid.
