Where it comes from

Our story of Dessie

Our story of Dessie begins with a sound looking for a home. Odessa was a name American families used — a city on the Black Sea that they had read about in newspapers and never seen — and Dessa and Dessie were what the household actually said. In the registers of the 1880s and 1890s the short form appears on its own, thousands of times, without any of its possible parents anywhere nearby. It peaked around 1890 and faded within two generations, leaving a name and no explanation.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No settled parent. Read through Odessa, it points to the Black Sea city, named in the 1790s after an ancient Greek settlement whose own name is unrecovered. Read through Desdemona, it is the Greek dysdaimon, 'ill-fated', which Shakespeare took from an Italian novella. Neither is documented as the source of the American name.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, soft and easy for a young child to say and spell.
  • Odessa is available as a longer and more formal option.
  • It is genuinely rare now while being entirely traditional in the registers.
What to consider
  • It has no documented parent name or meaning.
  • It is strongly period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
