The story of Desi
Desiderius was a Lombard king and several saints, and Spanish gives Desiderio. Desi Arnaz, born Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III in Havana in 1917, brought the short form to American attention and co-invented the multi-camera sitcom format along the way, which is a larger legacy than most names carry. The name appears in American records for men from the 1950s.
Meaning
desired, longed for
From Latin desiderium, longing, giving the name Desiderius and Spanish Desiderio; the same root gives desire. Separately Hindi and Urdu desi means of the homeland and is unrelated.

About 1 boy in 43,797 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 77,640 for Desi itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Delma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Desi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Delma climbed just as high around 1935, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Delma's path sketches the road Desi is walking now.
Desi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning that is warm and easy to explain.
- Desiderio stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
- Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
- The Hindi desi is a different word and is said differently.
- It is used for both sexes, so forms may guess wrong.
- It reads as a nickname, which may matter on a formal document.
