The story of Demarko
The Roman year began in March, and the month is named for Mars because it opened the season for war and for farming, which were the same season. His name generated one of the most widely used Roman first names, Marcus, and from it the family names Marcius and Martius, the adjective martial, and the name Martinus, which gave Martin. That means a set of the most ordinary names in Europe, Mark, Marcus, Marco, Marcos, Martin and Marcia, all carry a god whose worship ended sixteen centuries ago. The De- prefix at the front of this name is a twentieth-century American device with no connection to the Spanish or Italian particle, and the whole is a modern compound with an ancient second half.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
