Our story of Dayvion
There is a real problem this spelling solves. Davion, written that way, can be read DAY-vee-on or DAV-ee-on by an English reader, because English gives an unstressed a before a single consonant no reliable value. Adding the y forecloses the second reading. That is a small and entirely rational piece of orthographic engineering, and American naming does it constantly — Kayden for Caden, Jaycee for Jacy, Rayven for Raven, Dayvion for Davion. What it costs is that nobody can spell the name from hearing it, since the standard spelling and the corrected one sound identical. Dayvion's peak in 2008 sits at the late end of the -vion family, when the plainer spellings had already been used.

Not established
No source establishes an etymology. The Da- and Day- opening and the -vion ending are both American naming elements with no documented source; the family's sound is generally traced to Devon or Kevin without a demonstrable descent. David is sometimes offered as the source of the opening and is not documented as such.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
