Where it comes from

Our story of Daysha

Ours, offered as ours. There is a genuinely grand ancestor sitting one language away: Daria is the women's form of Darius, and Darius is Darayavaush, an Old Persian throne name meaning something like he who holds firm the good — the name of the king who built Persepolis. Russian wore it down to Dasha, which is what a grandmother calls a child. Daysha in American records almost certainly comes from elsewhere, and the Persian king is a fine thing to have nearby.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established for this spelling. Russian Dasha clips Daria, from Persian Darayavaush, holding firm the good — the same name as Darius. The Day- opening and -sha ending of modern American naming are the other and likelier source.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Daysha went to 37 girls in 2025, but Daisha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 63, which makes it the 897th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,006 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 25,512 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 43,440 for Daysha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
