The story of Dayne
Scandinavian settlement in England was heavy enough to leave a whole legal region called the Danelaw, and being identified as a Dane was ordinary enough to become a byname. Separately, a man who lived in a valley was called for it, and the two surnames merged in spelling. As a first name Dane became current in the twentieth century, and the y spelling belongs to the nineteen-nineties, when American families were adding letters to short names to make them their own.

a Dane; or from the valley
Two documented roads. The Middle English Dane was used of a person from Denmark. The surname Dane also arises from Old English denu, a valley, the same word behind Dean and Denby. Both produced English families, and the modern first name draws on both without distinguishing them.

The Horacio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dayne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Horacio climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Horacio's path sketches the road Dayne is walking now.
Dayne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
