The story of Daymond
The Damon story comes through Cicero and was told for two thousand years as the definition of friendship — the pair are Damon and Phintias, usually anglicized to Pythias, and the tyrant is Dionysius of Syracuse. The other likely parent is geographic: Desmond is Irish for South Munster, and the Earls of Desmond were one of the great Anglo-Irish dynasties until the crown destroyed them in the 1580s. Their territory was a third of the province. Both roads produce the same modern American spelling, and there is a third, from the stone, which contains a Greek word meaning untameable — so two of the three possible sources go back to the same verb.

Daymond sits between three names: Damon, from Greek damazo, to tame; Desmond, from Irish Deas-Mhumhan, South Munster; and the English word diamond. None has been shown to be the source, and the -mond ending is shared by all three.
