Daunte
Masculine · “enduring”
Dante wrote the Comedy in Italian and had to decide to. Serious work was written in Latin; the vernacular was for songs and letters. He argued the case in a book, then wrote fourteen thousand lines in Tuscan, and the language he used became the basis of standard Italian.

The story of Daunte
The decision to write in the vernacular was not obvious and Dante knew it, which is why he wrote a defense of the idea first. What followed did more than settle an argument: because the Comedy was read everywhere in Italy, and because Italy had no single spoken standard, the Tuscan of one poem became the model that later grammarians codified. Modern Italian is closer to fourteenth-century Florentine than modern English is to Chaucer, and that is largely why. He also invented the verse form he used — three-line stanzas interlocking so that each borrows a rhyme from the one before, which makes it almost impossible to remove a stanza without the poem noticing.
Meaning
enduring, steadfast
Dante is a shortened form of Durante, from Latin durans, enduring — the same root as durable and duration. Daunte is an American respelling with a u inserted. The name is not a coinage; it was an ordinary Italian name before its most famous bearer.

The Sinclair test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Daunte's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sinclair climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sinclair's path sketches the road Daunte is walking now.
Daunte sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
