From the middle of the twentieth century, Black American families built new names by taking prefixes, Da-, De-, La-, Ja-, Sha-, and setting them in front of names already loved in the house. Dashaun is exactly that: Shaun, carried over from Ireland through generations of English speakers, given an opening syllable that made it new and made it theirs. The result is a name with a genuinely old second half and a first half invented on purpose, in living memory, in the United States.
