Where it comes from

The story of Darvin

Deorwine was an Old English personal name that became a surname, and the family that carried it to Shrewsbury produced a doctor, a poet and then, in 1809, the naturalist. Darwin as a given name appears in American records from the nineteenth century, presumably in tribute; Darvin is a respelling that follows how many Americans say the middle consonant.

Meaning

dear friend

From Old English deore, dear or beloved, and wine, a friend; wine closes a great many Old English names, including Edwin, Godwin and Baldwin, and means a friend rather than the drink.
